Why are you letting your mind wander?

One moment you're thinking about how far you have come, the next is about the amount of work you still need to catch-up on, or what you will be having for lunch. The truth is that I have been guilty of doing this quite often. I have been guilty of letting my mind wander which has also had an impact on my emotions.

What exactly does it mean to "let your mind wander?" According to Phrase Finder, it means to let whatever thought come into your mind without you directing those thoughts. This explanation makes something clear to us: we have to control our thought-life. How do we do that? Lets find out from the scriptures. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."- 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)

We have been given the responsibility to monitor our thoughts. We need to take the "impostor" thoughts captive, which is not something that is to be done silently in our minds but it needs to be uttered. The battle isn't just about the wandering mind, it is also about the wrong/negative thoughts that we entertain on a daily basis. So what should we think about? Philippians 4:8 says this "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."- Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

Our thoughts play a vital role in our lives. The writer of Proverbs made this very clear by saying that a man is as he thinks. The things around us, what we see, as well as our experiences affect the way we think. Guard your mind by making a conscious decision daily to not entertain anything that will affect your thoughts negatively. For eg. Don't listen to music that leaves you feeling depressed because it will impact how you think.

With all that is happening in the world it can be very difficult to have and maintain a healthy thoughtlife; however, it is necessary. The truth is that there are days when I let my mind wander without realizing it, but that does not mean that I should stop taking those thoughts captive. I must keep on fighting this battle that is in my mind! The bad habit of entertaining bad thoughts was formed over a certain period of time and now a new habit is taking over and that too, requires time and patience.
